The HHELC works with Agencies, Medical and LA expertise to provide education for those unable to attend schools or colleges as a result of ill-health.
These professionals include schools colleges, medical professionals, Futures advisors, Education Welfare Officers and other agencies.
"Ill health" includes children and young people suffering from one or more of the following. · recurrent life-threatening illnesses which require regular hospitalisation · major illnesses which require hospitalisation · recuperation in hospital following illness or surgery · mental ill-health which requires hospitalisation · traits of mental ill-health which do not require hospitalisation but prevent a child or young person from full-time attendance in their own setting · anxious school refusal.
Objectives of the service
The HHELC will:
- ensure so far as is practical that the child or young person receives continuity of education commensurate with their age, ability, any special needs and medical condition
- ensure that it works closely with schools, colleges, children, young people and their families to maximise learners' achievement
- ensure that regular contact is maintained with schools and colleges of medium, long stay and recurrent pupils
- ensure that where possible support is given to children and young people as part of any reintegration package
- ensure that it delivers individually tailored programmes of study
- ensure that arrangements are made for Year 11 pupils to sit their GCSEs whilst in our Learning Centre if they are unable to do so in their own schools.
This service will give you access to
- experienced staff who are highly skilled in working with children and young people in a variety of settings.
- named contacts for these staff working with your children/young people
- advice on the impact of an illness on the future educational and emotional needs of your children/young people
- regular feedback on issues and progress
